Again we left a day early. The weather was good and calling for us to ride out of the humidity.Though the fog hindered our start it took us an abnormal amount of time to just get to the highway, but still we made it to Brennan in record time!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0157-261 Brennan Harbour Rd, Serpent River, ON P0P 1V0, Canada46.186070091068451 -82.38595962524414146.180573591068452 -82.395830125244146 46.191566591068451 -82.376089125244135tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3168886834581776531.post-31942543248346780212011-09-12T15:59:00.001-07:002011-09-12T15:59:54.485-07:00

So its our last day and the sun is out a few clouds, but hey this is it.
We get out early and the day gets nicer and nicer the wind is virtually gone, and the temp. is getting higher. Lovely day. But not for fishing, it was a clam-fest! At least we were able to check out a few other spots that were more than 5 minutes away now. We checked out a few of our spots from the previous year, like Little Detriot and even came close to checking out the Benjamin Islands, though we had no clue how close were till later.
We go in a little early so we can pre pack the car, and have dinner. The talk is again...all about the weather, (by this time we are all out on the lodge's deck enjoying the scenery), but for once how much nicer it was on the water. By late afternoon we have found freedom from coats and sweatshirts. Everyone arrives for dinner in short sleeved shirts! Yes I know unbelievable! We have now, and for the last few days, all sat at the big people's table all together rather than craning our necks to talk. We check out with Casey, say our good byes, re booked for next year week of Labour Day. Everyone's pretty quick to head out to see if we can salvage any fish from the lake, for the last couple hours of light.
To no avail. So we went in and called it quits for 2010.
The morning came and we said goodbye to lake & headed out.
So that my friends is Fishing In Spanish 2010. If you ever can make it up there even for an overnight stay you'll be glad you did.
My husband and I have done a fishing trip for a few years now, have hit Temagimi area,Parry Sound, Rice Lake, Huntsville, and the great lap-of-the-lake on Nipissing (which has too many resorts to choose from!), and last year was the the first year we re-booked as we checked out. I still don't know, James and Casey, if it is the fishing or the location, but I do know its the people of Brennan Harbour Resort that keep us coming back!! See you in 2011!!
So normally we are clocking 8-10 hrs on the boat a day on this annual fishing jont. But I think we've paid Mother Nature to clean off our boat this week. Yes again not looking too promising, and it seems a little colder out today too.We headed up to the lodge with coffee in hand, to again, kill time till the weather accommodated, and hang with our fellow fish folks. Shorty comes into the lodge & chats about with all of us, then asks us to try a spot he thinks might be worthy. Its a short trip, straight out the bay, hang a left and look for the two islands named blablabla....Okay so heres the thing, there are very few islands actually marked with names, and the two that I know of are Vance's Bay, they are marked on either side of the bay. So when our Shorty tells us by name where to go or where we've been....we have no clue. You have to remember that all these little islands are pretty well named but an island to you and I may not be to Shorty. You kind gotta give him some idea...like..."You know that island with the rock and the tree that's kinda bent...." Which describes all the islands out here!! We take our time to get out there and the sun is trying to peek out. We get out to what we think is the area he mentioned and we see "Dad and Dave" out there and a few others from another resort Blue Heron. Dave is getting quite proficient at catching clams out here. The man has talent!!! Crap its getting cold.....oops that was not my inside voice. The wind is making us drift quickly, which means I am multi- tasking, reading, drinking coffee and moving the boat.
Another hour later we decide to hit our hole. By which time I am officially freezing and have McGivered the Thermos bag and safety vest around my legs. By this time even Graham is feeling the chill,we go in for lunch and get warmed up. Now as I mentioned we have forgone any and all traditional things we have done in the past for this trip.I mean really, how many years do we pack the winter coats, fleece wear, gloves and heavy duty fishing shoes & wool socks and never use them? Now the winter coats were going no matter what,it only took the one trip up to Rice Lake years ago when it started to snow and we ran into town to buy new ones, that was not going to happen ever again! So I really had very little to layer with. But I layered up like a true Canuck! 4 layers on top, 2 in the middle and 3 on the feet!!
We didn't have too much luck that day either a couple small fish.
The talk at the lodge at dinner was,not how many we'd caught, but how many layers did you have on?Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3168886834581776531.post-74619094906758085842010-09-13T16:10:00.000-07:002010-09-15T13:49:47.278-07:00
Fish Fry 2009
Sept. 8, 2010
I rise at 6:30 am...why I think to myself, will the weather be any better today? The darkness in the cabin suggests, that either the clock is wrong or....you guessed it its raining. I settle in with a cup of tea and look out the bay window at the show. Winds a blow'n, and grey clouds are moving quickly. Rain is coming I can sense it, then it happens, thunder, it settles down in few minutes.
But still its looking like it may be a couple hours before it could clear. Second cup of tea.So now the show really begins, theres the thunder then the lightening. From our window we are sitting back and watching what Mother Nature is putting out.It keeps coming, every time we "Ooh" from the left the right of the bay shows another clap ! By this time I have sent hubby up to the lodge to see if theres room for us for breakfast. Again,we only booked in for the evening meal,so this is the time when I would be making our lunch for out on the boat, but at this point I may not have to bother. Hes back and its "completely fine" Casey says, for us to join the Breakfast Club.If nothing else this week our timing was good. We are getting ready and we see the two young guys, whom I could not name earlier going out on the boat!!! We made it up to the lodge as the thunder and lightning is joined by huge winds and rain.
So all the talk is about how these two young guys looked like they were fleeing the country heading out in this weather. With the binoculars we can just barely see where they are, they are straight out of the bay. James is doing what he can to cook and and not pace while thinking if hes going to have to go out and get these two. Rule of thumb, if you wouldn't let your dog out in this weather why would you go?Lightning.... aluminum boat...mmm.Ah, I guess we all did things that seemed alright at the time when were younger, and maybe they thought they'd beat the weather out there and it would clear up,who knows. At this point we all have a table at a window and are craning to see the ongoing lightning and eating to see if these guys are coming back. James mentions that it will be a costly for them if they have to call the helicopter to get them. Perhaps it was then, after a suggestion for a volunteer rescue attempt, (with no takers) Casey decides to try their cell phone, sure enough, she gets them to come in. But I'll tell you it was getting worse by the time they even reach our bay, and though they would not admit it I'm sure, we could tell they were having a heck of a time getting back with the white caps and all. Bet mortality kicked in though!
We all had another cup of coffee, and the bets started on the wait. It started to clear up after an hour or so, and we all went out. The rest of the day was still a little chilly, but much better than it'd been the previous days. So I was out there trying to brake the heal of my second book of the week,it didn't take. The sun was coming out and looked like it was going to stay. Now I'm not saying it was warm, I'm not even mentioning that my winter coat and I were becoming the best of friends. So I let out a line. I kid you not I had just moved to the front of the boat and sat down when I started to get a nibble. Two minutes later I landed my biggest catch to date,(pic below) a Walleye, but alias it was in the slot,so back to swim free it went. Was ready to sing the theme from "Born Free", but that would age me. Then Graham landed a catfish, then another. So this was our spot for the week.
As it was so cold again the fish fry was held up in the lodge,James does a great job with the fish, and the ladies in the "background" (we'll call it this as kitchen seems to antiquated) do a great job with the potatoes, cole slaw and baked beans. Yummy! Normally its held in the gazebo that is located in the center of the resort, and you get to have a drink and a chat with some that you may not have met yet.
We fished after dinner that day too, only after we'd gone up and gotten more bait from the Bait Queen Evelina . Evelina is James and Casey's 1 year old, what a sweetie! When ever you need bait she hands it to you with the cutest smile, then acts all coy!! So what looked like we would be rained out that day turned out to be one of the best days. Only in Ontario folks!!

Sept. 7, 2010
As with the weather, the days are running into each other and there wasn't too much to talk about on this day. We had a short reprieve this after noon but not too long. Graham caught a few small mouths, but practised his catch and release. But as with most days, Maggy , the Boarder Collie is at the dock to welcome us in. Milo resorts org. dog, is quite selective about if and when he would a scratch, and seems very happy to be the top dog and mill about at his liesure.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3168886834581776531.post-46671212000997889932010-09-13T15:01:00.000-07:002010-09-14T08:09:33.655-07:00

Sept. 6, 2010
So okay, guess what...yup its raining. But as it was cold and such we decided to head into town to grab breakfast to kill some time, (we booked in for only the evening meal). Shorty catches us and asks why we're not fishing. He thinks its the perfect day.I tell him I don't do rain....I could melt! So he suggest Graham and him go out. So they do, and do pretty well. They catch their limit and are able to supply fish for the fish fry on Wed. If you want to hire Shorty, (and you do), for guiding you want to hit him up early, any one that's been there before usually marks a day when they get there, its pretty much tradition to fish with him. Kinda like going out with a fishing buddy that you never can meet up with. So we figure to leave it in his hands what day is best. So Monday it was.Shorty will size up the right holes and we've never seen anyone get skunked with him! In fact a couple of guys,(sorry on the names, they weren't at the lodge enough for us to catch names) caught a beauty of a rainbow on their last day with Shorty.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3168886834581776531.post-6828918314727793272010-09-13T14:24:00.000-07:002010-09-15T13:33:37.223-07:00Sept. 5, 2010
Okay so now we are getting a little miffed at the weather. In all the years we've been away during the same week,we may have had day or two that were not supreme, but at some point we've always gotten out there for more than a few hours at some point. This is proving to be a wash by day 3. But alias, the company is good,we've met a nice couple from Niagara, even a father and son from our local area in London. This is a nice change,we are normally the only Canadians at a resort. There is another fishing party with 3 fellows from....crap I forgot, the States at any rate. They got here on prev. Wed. and were having a tough time too with the weather. The worst was that it is they brought a young fellow with them, and as there is no satellite TV up here, only in the lodge,(your cabin has TV & DVD player) so I think he got kinda bored after dark.
So the smack talk had begun yesterday at dinner, about the ones that got away . How large our catches were last year. Dave and his Dad have been up before,so they are pretty used to the area and we all share our fav holes. Honestly this is the first place we've been that every ones in it to win it,so to speak, but everyone shares their holes . Theres none of that vague, "Oh we were over there..." Its a, do ask, do tell society at Brennan. The saying seems to be "its a big lake lots of room for everyone".You'll find as you boat around, that Breannan guests slow down and see if its someone from the resort, and share info, never had that before. I guess the mentality is, if you want to continue with good fishing in the years ahead, keep only your limit and watch your slot sizes. Nice to see there are others that follow that train of thought, and conform to regulations. It seems to be a daily occurrence that at some point we gather at the the map of the bay, and drink in hand speck out where we were. Though unless Shorty's around we can never be too sure.
Shorty is the resort's handyman/fish guide/info center .Heck we even rely on him for the weather at this stage. He's lived here all his life, and you can see hes still loves it here.
We've been really lucky to meet up with some very nice people from the States, so far too. Rick was up from Cincinnati (?) with his nephew Justin,we'd met them last year. Rick comes up several times a year, I think James may have to hire him on as a temp fishing guide should Shorty ever retire! This guy can catch fish ! Never skunked, and is quite modest about it too!! You'll see his catch on the website, fellow in the red shirt I believe.
So that was it for the day.
Okay I'm gonna break down here and give it to you, as we love this resort and the people, and they deserve the highest praise for the way they run this piece of paradise. Its almost a nice secret to keep for the ones that have found it. But here it is http://www.brennanharbour.com/
A little about Brennan Harbour Resort

Brennan Harbour is located a few minutes outside of the town of Spanish Ont., between Sudbury and Elliot Lake, and has a grocery,convience,liquor/beer store .
Please excuse any points I may have missed but all the details are on the website, this meant to be quick over view.
This is our little take on this resort. My husband and I have stayed in many places in Ontario, in everything from quite literally fishing shack to ceramic tiled flooring, very up scaled fishing resorts.
Brennan Harbour is a terrific resort,it is rustic in comfort, but has all the "mod cons" needed. By this I mean that your immaculately clean "Housekeeping" cabin has all the the things you would need, showers /toilets, full kitchen, living room areas, single and double beds, and decks to view the wonderful scenery. The decor is typical of most fishing resorts, comfort and simple living. Ceiling fans, extra pillows & blankets are nice touches to other places we've stayed. There is a TV/DVD in each cabin, but no cable/satellite (though it is available in the lodge)so bring your favourite movies, there is also selection to borrow at the lodge. There is wireless Internet at the lodge if you need to stay in touch with the outside world. The boats are standard, upgrade, and a Rebel, that are very clean and run beautifully. The fishing is great and there is no need too travel far to get them either, the harbour itself boasts of huge catches. There is Horseshoe pit, swings, and lovely beach for kids as well. If you feel you want a break from the kitchen this would be the place to try it. Brennan has a Full American Plan that includes breakfast, packed lunch, dinner with dessert and even a dinner only plan should you choose. The food here is delicious, and is given in generous portions. Adding the option that if you are having a great day fishing that your dinner will be waiting for you in your cabin if you don't want to come in. The people at the harbour are absolutely fantastic from the owners to the staff, everyone is very welcoming, friendly and genuine and are always ready to make your stay the best possible. Its the perfect place for fishing groups and families alike. Its been mentioned that men will go up with their fishing buddies and return again with their spouse. We have also met some that return several times a season,as the fishing is that good!! I don't think it will be long before this is one of the resorts that you cannot book into because people keep coming back year after year! You will leave feeling like family here! Of all the resorts we've been to this certainly rates a 5 star experience!!

Sept. 3, 2010

So my husband and I decided to go up a day early to Brennan Harbour Resort since we both had the time off,we had such a great time last year we could not wait to get back.Deciding to break all the usual traditions of our drive up, stopping here and there at usual haunts, we'd leave slightly earlier and cut down on T.O and Labour Day weekend traffic. This is all in the hopes of getting out onto the water sooner. The morning proved to be slightly cloudy in London, Ont.,but heck we'd always had good weather whenever we'd go away this week each year. Even the fact that it was raining steadily,we gave in and swung into the Can. Tire at Parry Sound to get new standard wipers for the squeaky ones we had put on the car no more than 3 months ago. (Let us all hand over heart not bend to the marketing ploys of new wiper blades),they have been the noisiest wipers from day one, and needless to say only really did the job on the right hand side.I will not insert the name the brand but my new slogan for them is,
"A?^*#L my a*s, might be great for tires but sucks for glass!" Still we were not worried about the rain.
We did however decide to make a stop at the French River snowmobile bridge,(I'm sure it has more formal name, and perhaps is even part of an provincial park of sorts). As we'd passed by it every year we thought it might be a good place to stretch the legs. Its a small bridge but a really nice view of the river, gives a taste of what the fur traders must have had to go through back in the day.
We then stopped a couple minutes down the road at the French River Trading Post for lunch. Its a place we've stopped before, has a really nice gift shop with all kinds of souvenirs and chats-kees as well.

Then the sigh began as we realized we still had a ways to go,so lets hunker down and get to it. Once you hit Sudbury though you truly feel the sense of "north-ness",the rock that has been cut out to make the highway seems to climb higher. To me, it starts to quiet my mind and feel the urge to throw on some Gordon Lightfoot. After all, is this not the music we used to laugh at our parents for listening to cause it was for "old fogies" ? Yes it was true, but with age comes appreciation, and also makes the mind recall simpler times, never mind that he sings of the true Canadian struggle. Gordon can play on the mind after a bit, so we swapped over to our ol' favs from our childhood summers.
So finally we hit Sudbury and the switch to head ever closer to Spanish...

Okay so last year was our first year at the resort, and we walked on the unique walk ways built with the local rocks of the area up to the lodge. The sun was shinning, the closer we get the more of the harbour opens up,theres nothing but sun dancing on the water and open blue sky. I stop and say to my husband..."I think we're home". What a view!!!
Needless to say it kept getting better from there,Casey and James whom are the owners of this resort greeted us as if we'd known each other for years. Theres no "check in" like at other places, where you are giving them everything shy of your first born . Nope, just showed us to our cabin and James commences to grab his ATV trailer and help unload our car.
Well okay now its fairly late in the day and we've only got a couple hours till dinner,so we quickly unpack and we are out on the water. We do a quick little survey of the area and start to fish, well my husband fished, while I do the thing I love the most, read a book. As long as I am near or on the water its my vacation thing to do.This is what this water-baby dreams of all year long,to get away from the hussel of city life, to look up form my book and gaze at the beauty of our country. Never mind the quiet...the sound of water lapping up against shore and to hear no more than a Loon cry.My standard quote is me saying,"Do you hear that? ....Peace". No more trains, planes or sirens. Yes its heaven, my shoulders relax and I care for nothing but just relaxing.... and spending hours out on the water. The weather was fantastic last year.

So at any rate back to 2010, this year we arrive, fairly early. With hearty greeting from James and Shorty, they are as usual working away on the upkeep of the grounds. Yes its overcast, and very windy, but hey so what we are a day early and we are here.
We enter the lodge and wait to check in (which is Bennan-speak) for saying "Hi" to Casey, and we are over to the cottage.
We take our time unpacking cause there is no way we are going out onto the lake before dinner with this gaol. If you know Ontario at all you know we seem to have 2 seasons, summer and winter, the other 2 seasons can creep up during any point of the day.Give it an hour and it'll change...
So we look forward to a wonderful meal at the lodge, and meeting some of the other people staying at the resort, of course are not disappointed!
To end off the day. We stayed in the cabin as the weather was showing no signs of changing.Better luck tomorrow!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
